Job Description

You will serve as a Physical Science Technician in the Radiological Monitoring Division, Radiological Control Office at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Your primary duty is conducting continuous radiation control surveillance of activities, personnel, and material in assigned areas aboard nuclear vessels or within the shipyard.

You will perform radiological evaluations of various worksites—industrial areas, shipboard spaces, and non-industrial zones—to verify the adequacy of protective clothing and equipment planned for use by personnel.

Qualification

To qualify for the GS-06 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 performing radiation surveys, utilizing control practices, and interpreting work plans for radiological safety. For GS-05, one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 or a bachelor's degree with relevant coursework may substitute.

  • GS-06: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-05 performing radiation surveys and implementing storage and decontamination activities.
  • GS-06: Experience using ship and shipyard layout (safety equipment, drain water/sewage systems, harbor, contaminated equipment, radiation sources) to plan incident control.
  • GS-06: Experience with ventilation, detection, filtration, and containment systems to ensure adequacy of standard containment and ventilation procedures.
  • GS-06: Experience interpreting work plans to detect deviations from approved procedures and ensure radiological safety compliance.
  • GS-05: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-04 applying standardized rules and procedures for laboratory principles, methods, and techniques.
  • GS-05: Experience setting up, operating, maintaining, and calibrating test equipment with known standards.
  • GS-05: Experience selecting and applying standards to determine which samples need further testing and referral.
  • GS-05: Experience gathering, recording, and assembling data and reporting observations to appropriate personnel.
  • Education substitution for GS-05: A full 4-year bachelor's degree with major study in physical science, or 24 semester hours in physical science, engineering, or mathematics (excluding financial/commercial).

Role Responsibilities

Conduct continuous radiation control surveillance of activities, personnel, and material in assigned areas within a nuclear vessel or shipyard.

  • Perform radiological evaluations of industrial work areas, shipboard spaces, and non-industrial work sites.
  • Verify adequacy of protective clothing and equipment planned for use by personnel.
  • Participate in all phases of radiation-related emergencies and incidents under guidance.
  • Use ship and shipyard layout knowledge to plan incident control measures.
  • Work with ventilation, detection, filtration, and containment systems to ensure adequacy of procedures.
  • Interpret work plans to detect deviations from approved procedures and ensure radiological safety compliance.
  • Apply standardized rules and procedures for laboratory principles, methods, and techniques (GS-05).
