Job Description
The City of Glendale (CA) is hiring a Police Communications Trainee to join the Police Communications Bureau. This full-time, unclassified (non-civil service, at-will) position is designed for individuals who will receive structured training while performing progressively responsible tasks in emergency communications.
As a trainee, you will learn to receive, identify, and evaluate emergency and routine calls for police services, route 911 calls for Fire and EMS, and refer calls to other agencies.
You will monitor police personnel and unit status, determine appropriate dispatch resources using voice radio and a computer-aided dispatch system, and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Qualification

- Ability to receive, identify, and accurately evaluate emergency and routine calls for police services.
- Ability to route 911 calls for Fire and EMS services and refer calls to other agencies.
- Skill in monitoring and maintaining the status of police personnel and units as to location and availability.
- Ability to determine appropriate personnel and equipment to be dispatched using voice radio and computer-aided dispatch system.
- Capacity to relay, follow, repeat, and remember complex oral and written instructions, information, and directions.
- Ability to use established policies and procedures, independent judgment, common sense, and reason to make rapid and accurate decisions.
- Willingness to work under close supervision and participate in training leading to progressively responsible tasks.
- Must be able to work full-time in an unclassified, at-will capacity.
Role Responsibilities
Receive, identify, and accurately evaluate emergency and routine calls for police services.
- Route 911 calls for Fire and EMS services and refer calls to other agencies as appropriate.
- Make required notifications to appropriate personnel or agencies.
- Monitor and maintain the status of all police personnel and units regarding location and availability.
- Determine appropriate personnel and equipment to be dispatched using voice radio and computer-aided dispatch system.
- Relay, follow, repeat, and remember complex oral and written instructions, information, and directions.
- Use established policies and procedures, independent judgment, common sense, and reason to make rapid and accurate decisions.
- Participate in training work leading to progressively responsible tasks in the Police Communications Bureau.
Conditions & Requirements
This is an unclassified, non-civil service, at-will full-time position.
- Must be able to work full-time hours as scheduled.
- Ability to pass any required background check or pre-employment screening (implied for public safety role).
