Job Description
The Grand Junction VA Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado, is seeking a Police Officer to protect life and property on VA-controlled property. This role involves enforcing laws, conducting patrols, responding to emergencies, and performing traffic control.
The position is full-time with rotating 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. This is a permanent appointment with a salary range of $66,333 to $86,232 per year. Qualification
To qualify for this GS-6 Police Officer position, you must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in federal service. This experience must include maintaining order, taking complaints, interviewing witnesses, securing crime scenes, responding to emergencies, and conducting patrols and traffic investigations.
- One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (or equivalent pay band).
- Experience must include maintaining order to protect life and property; taking initial complaints; interviewing witnesses; securing a crime scene and conducting limited searches; responding to emergency situations; gathering information and preparing reports; conducting routine patrol, traffic control, and traffic accident investigations.
- Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying.
- Military Police Officer experience with arrest authority is qualifying. Military service must include one of the listed specialties on the DD-214 (e.g., Army 31B, Marine Corps 5811, Air Force 3P0X1, Navy 9545).
- Preferred experience: Prior law enforcement with arrest authority.
- There is no educational substitution at this grade level.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Protect the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property.
- Prevent, detect, and investigate crimes.
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle.
- Subdue persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others.
- Follow rules and procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband.
- Obtain search and arrest warrants.
- Arrest violators.
- Provide basic first aid and CPR prior to arrival of emergency medical personnel.
- Prepare reports of activities and events that occurred during shift.
- Perform traffic control.
Conditions & Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Subject to a background/security investigation.
- Designated drug-testing position: must pass urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Must complete a pre-employment medical examination and psychological examination.
- Must have good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear conversational voice.
- Must attend an 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas (condition of continued employment).
- Must serve a 1-year probationary period.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
- Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
