The San José Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join the June 2027 academy as Police Recruits. This entry-level position is for applicants who do not currently hold a California P.O.S.T.

Qualification

This position is for applicants who do NOT possess a California P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate or who have graduated from a California P.O.S.T. Academy but have NOT completed a patrol field training program. The San Jose Police Department does not accept the California P.O.S.T. Waiver.

  • Must not currently possess a California P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate.
  • If graduated from a California P.O.S.T. Academy, must not have completed a patrol field training program.
  • Police officers from other states and federal law enforcement officers without a California P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate are eligible.
  • Must complete the written and physical agility exams before receiving an oral interview invitation.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation and medical/psychological evaluation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status at time of application.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license by time of appointment.
Role Responsibilities

Attend and successfully complete the San Jose Police Department's academy training program.

  • Learn and apply California P.O.S.T. standards and department policies.
  • Develop skills in community policing, de-escalation, and use of force.
  • Participate in physical fitness training and defensive tactics.
  • Study criminal law, report writing, and evidence handling.
  • Engage with community members to build trust and partnerships.
  • Respond to calls for service under supervision during field training.
  • Operate department equipment and vehicles safely.
