The National Park Service is hiring a Public Safety Dispatcher for the Midwest Region at Gateway Arch National Park in Saint Louis, Missouri.

This role is in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division and involves operating a regional communications center that serves multiple National Parks.

Qualification

To qualify for the GS-6 level, you need one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5, such as providing pre-arrival medical instructions or operating NCIC. For GS-7, one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-6 is required, including prioritizing calls and using emergency systems. There is no substitution of education for experience.

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old, or 16 with high school diploma or equivalent.
  • For GS-06: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, e.g., providing pre-arrival medical instructions, operating law enforcement databases (NLETS, CJIS, NCIC), or preparing records of significant events.
  • For GS-07: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06, e.g., providing communication support to responders, prioritizing calls for service, using emergency systems to coordinate response, or training others on dispatching systems.
  • Volunteer experience, including Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, counts as qualifying experience.
  • All qualifications must be met by the closing date: 07/27/2026.
  • Must complete initial online assessment and USA Hire Assessment if required.
  • Must submit to a drug test and receive negative result prior to appointment; subject to random testing.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.

Role Responsibilities

Perform emergency and non-emergency dispatch and call-taking for public safety incidents in a regional communications center serving multiple National Parks.

  • Monitor and track equipment and personnel (law enforcement, structural fire, wildland fire, vessels, search and rescue) using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) program.
  • Operate a multi-frequency radio console and prioritize radio traffic and communications.
  • Use National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and other law enforcement databases and records management systems.
  • Perform records management, general public assistance, and support to other park offices and partners.
  • At GS-07, may obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification.
  • Duties are developmental when filled below full performance level; promotion not guaranteed.
