Pump Station Operator

To qualify for the Pump Station Operator position, candidates must meet specific experience and education requirements. The City of San Diego requires a combination of training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

• Experience operating wastewater pump stations or similar industrial equipment.
• Knowledge of computer control systems for monitoring and adjusting equipment.
• Ability to handle chemicals and hazardous materials safely.
• Experience performing minor repairs on pumps, motors, and chemical feeders.
• Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, and control system data.
• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in water/wastewater operations preferred.
• Valid California driver's license may be required.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Operate wastewater pump stations using computer control systems and manual controls.

• Start and stop pumps, valves, compressors, blowers, and monitors.
• Operate sluice gates and control traveling screens and conveyors.
• Monitor and adjust chemical pumps and handle chemicals and hazardous materials.
• Diagnose process problems and malfunctions and take corrective action.
• Monitor recorders, indicators, and equipment; read and record gauges.
• Inspect equipment and pump station grounds for abnormal conditions and security.
• Record and tabulate data on pump station operating logs and complete forms.
• Perform minor repairs on pumps, motors, chemical feeders, and related equipment.
• Keep pump station equipment clean and orderly.

Must be able to work in a 24/7 operational environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Must pass a background check and drug screening.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
• Must have a valid California driver's license or ability to obtain one.
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Competitive salary range of $69,306
