Job Description

The Department of the Navy is hiring a Rigger Leader to provide technical trade leadership to small work groups at naval shipyards and maintenance facilities. This role is critical for ensuring safe and efficient rigging operations that support fleet readiness.

As a Rigger Leader, you will lead a team of riggers, assign tasks, and ensure materials and equipment are available and in safe working condition.

You will instruct subordinates on unusual work steps and safety procedures, and recommend task assignments based on crew skills. This position is ideal for experienced riggers who have demonstrated supervisory ability and want to apply their skills in a federal environment.

The work involves physical labor, use of personal protective equipment, and potential exposure to hazardous conditions. Positions are available at multiple locations including San Diego, CA; Pearl Harbor, HI; Portsmouth, ME; Philadelphia, PA; Portsmouth, VA; and various Washington state sites.

Salary & Compensation

Estimated market salary: $95,000 - $175,000 per year.

Qualification

This position requires demonstrated ability to lead or supervise, which is the screen-out element. Applicants must show through experience and training that they possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the WL-9/10 level.

  • Ability to lead or supervise a small work group (screen-out element).
  • Experience in rigging operations, including knowledge of rigging techniques, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical orders related to rigging.
  • Skill in using rigging tools and equipment such as cranes, hoists, slings, and shackles.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and practices applicable to rigging and material handling.
  • Ability to instruct and train subordinates on work methods and safety.
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous work, including climbing, lifting, and working at heights.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a security clearance.
Role Responsibilities

Provide technical trade leadership to a small working group of riggers.

  • Ensure necessary materials are available and tools/equipment are in safe operational condition.
  • Recommend specific task assignments for each member of the work crew.
  • Instruct subordinates on unusual work steps or requirements, including safe equipment operation.
  • Monitor work progress and ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with other trades and supervisors to complete projects on schedule.
  • Maintain records of work performed and report any issues to higher-level supervisors.

Additional Information

Salary range: $28.59

  • $50.37 per hour (WL-9/10).
  • This is a full-time position with potential for overtime, night differential, and uncommon tours including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass a pre-appointment physical examination and drug test.
  • Security clearance required; failure to obtain may result in removal.
  • May be subject to random drug testing and medical surveillance.
  • Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, high noise levels, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Travel may be required to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote sites.
