Qualification

To qualify for the Sergeant position, candidates must meet the State of South Carolina minimum requirements: a high school diploma and relevant experience. Additional specialized training and experience in corrections or security supervision are preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
  • Experience in corrections, security, or supervisory role preferred.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate staff performance.
  • Strong investigative and report-writing skills.
  • Knowledge of security, safety, and sanitation standards in a correctional setting.
  • Must be able to perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening.
  • U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Role Responsibilities

Supervise subordinate security staff assigned to housing units.

  • Supervise, custody, and control all inmates assigned to housing units.
  • Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
  • Investigate alleged misconduct of inmates and security personnel.
  • Assist in conducting formal and informal inmate counts.
  • Supervise job performance, conduct, and appearance of assigned security personnel.
  • Prepare employee evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions.
  • Counsel and train subordinate staff to required performance standards.
  • Prepare reports as needed or required.
  • Perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.

Must be able to work full-time, including shifts, weekends, and holidays.

  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (typical for corrections officers).
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position, including standing, walking, and restraining inmates if necessary.
