USCIS Field Operations Directorate, District 11 is hiring a Supervisory Immigration Services Officer in Lawrence, MA. In this role, you will lead a team that researches and makes final determinations on difficult, precedent-setting immigration benefits cases.
You will assign work, set priorities, and provide technical guidance on applications and petitions under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Qualification
To qualify for this GS-13 Supervisory Immigration Services Officer position, you must be a current USCIS employee with competitive status and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12.
- Current USCIS employees with competitive status (USCIS CTAP or RPL eligibles also eligible).
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 in the federal government.
- Experience making final determinations on difficult and sensitive immigration benefits cases that are discretionary, precedent-setting, and highly visible.
- Experience rendering immigration benefits decisions that have substantial impact on federal, state, and local agencies.
- Experience analyzing new immigration benefits regulations, complex technical amendments, and procedures for final determinations on applications/petitions.
- Time-in-Grade: Current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at GS-12 or equivalent by 07/27/2026.
- No educational substitution at this grade level.
- Must successfully complete the USCIS Immigration Service Officer Basic (ISO BASIC) Training Program in Charleston, SC (5-6 weeks).
- Failure to meet the minimum exam average in ISO BASIC may result in removal.
Role Responsibilities
Research and make case determinations, including hearing and adjudicating appeals, and deciding on reopening or reconsidering cases.
- Provide technical and administrative advice to staff examining applications, petitions, and supporting documentation.
- Respond to applicant questions and resolve problems using established methods and criteria without causing unnecessary delays.
- Assign work based on priorities, difficulty, and employee capabilities.
- Plan work for subordinates, set short-term priorities, and establish target dates for completion.
- Oversee the analysis of eligibility for immigration benefits, employment, and legal status under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
- Ensure staff comply with regulations and procedures for making final determinations.
Conditions & Requirements
Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
- Successfully pass a background investigation including financial disclosure.
- Pass a drug screening.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- This position is considered 'essential' for reporting to work when the facility might otherwise be closed.
- Residency requirement: For three of the last five years, must have resided in the U.S., worked overseas for the U.S. Government, or been a dependent of a U.S. Federal/Military employee serving overseas.
- May be required to serve a 12-month supervisory probationary period.
- Must complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment.
- Political appointees may require OPM approval before onboarding.
