Supervisory Pharmacy Technician - Inpatient IV Room

To qualify for this GS-9 Supervisory Pharmacy Technician position, you must be a current permanent VA employee and meet the basic requirements including U.S. Citizenship, English proficiency, and active national certification (PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT). Additionally, you need one year of experience equivalent to GS-08 and must demonstrate the required KSAs.

• U.S. citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
• Active national certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT through PTCB or ExCPT through NHA).
• One year of experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level.
• Expert knowledge in sterile compounding (USP 797/800), controlled substances (DEA), or other specialty area.
• Skill in analyzing data for performance improvement projects, workload analysis, and statistical reports.
• Ability to solve problems and implement corrective actions to maximize program outcomes.
• Ability to maintain special accreditations and prepare for national reviews/inspections (e.g., The Joint Commission, Inspector General).
• Ability to develop training programs and materials for orientation, competency development, and regulatory requirements.
• English language proficiency required (38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)).
• Grandfathering provision applies to current VHA pharmacy technicians who met qualifications at time of appointment.

Oversee inpatient pharmacy dispensing operations with a focus on sterile compounding program requirements.

• Serve as a frontline supervisor with limited direct reports, providing leadership and coordination for technician team members.
• Staff various IV or triage-focused inpatient pharmacy work while concurrently managing supervisory responsibilities.
• Coordinate daily sterile compounding training, competency assessments, and technician work assignments in collaboration with the sterile compounding program manager.
• Maintain knowledge of USP 800/797, pharmacy law, DEA regulations, and VHA directives.
• Lead change through innovation, lead people effectively, and promote quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with stakeholders within the Pharmacy Department and throughout the Medical Center.
• Prepare for and participate in national reviews and inspections (e.g., The Joint Commission, Inspector General).
• Develop and implement training programs for orientation and ongoing competency development.
• Analyze data for self-driven performance improvement projects and generate workload analysis reports.
