The New York Army National Guard is hiring a Surface Maintenance Mechanic (WG-5801-10) for its Logistics facility at 330 Old Niskayuna Road in Latham, NY.
This full-time, permanent position involves diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment. You will work on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive lines, electrical systems, fuel injection, and emission controls.
The role also covers hydraulic lifting, loading, and positioning systems.
Qualification
This position is open to current Title 32 National Guard employees within the NYNG facility. Military grade requirement: Enlisted. You need general experience in routine maintenance and use of common tools, plus 18 months specialized experience in complex vehicle systems.

- General Experience: Training or experience demonstrating knowledge of equipment to perform routine jobs and simple preventative maintenance tasks using common tools.
- Specialized Experience: 18 months of experience or training leading to thorough knowledge of mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that affect mechanical system operation.
- Knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls.
- Basic knowledge of electronics sufficient to identify and replace defective components such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards.
- Ability to repair or overhaul major components including diesel, multi-fuel, or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.

Role Responsibilities
Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and overhaul of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Repair, adjust, and maintain self-propelled transportation and other mobile equipment (except aircraft), including any special purpose features.
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using test equipment and technical manuals.
- Overhaul and replace engines, transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, and other major assemblies.
- Repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, and lines.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including wiring, sensors, and electronic control modules.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and services according to schedules.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment following established safety rules and regulations.
- May be required to work irregular or overtime hours to support operational requirements or contingencies.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. Must be a member of the NY National Guard in a compatible military assignment prior to effective date of placement.
