The City of El Paso is hiring a Utility Plant Technician to support water and wastewater operations across various locations in El Paso, Texas. In this role, you will perform mechanical maintenance, monitor plant equipment, and ensure compliance with state regulations.

Salary $41,680 - $60,853 per year
Qualification

To qualify, you need a high school diploma or GED plus one year of mechanical maintenance experience, or 12 semester hours of college credit with six months of maintenance experience. Completion of the EPW Utility Plant Operator Trainee Program with a Class D Water or Wastewater Operator's License also meets the requirement.

  • High School Diploma or GED or higher.
  • One (1) year of mechanical maintenance experience OR twelve (12) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university AND six (6) months of maintenance experience.
  • OR completion of the El Paso Water (EPW) Utility Plant Operator Trainee Program with a Class D Water or Wastewater Operator's License.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License or equivalent from another state at time of appointment.
  • Class D Water or Wastewater Operator's License issued by the State of Texas required within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must obtain a higher-level Water or Wastewater Operator's License within thirty (30) months of hire date.
  • Some positions require CDL Class C, B, or A with HAZMAT endorsement within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Positions requiring CDL or safety-sensitive roles subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Role Responsibilities

Operate and monitor water and wastewater treatment plant equipment.

  • Perform mechanical maintenance and repairs on pumps, motors, valves, and other plant machinery.
  • Collect and test water samples to ensure quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of plant operations.
  • Respond to alarms and emergency situations at plant facilities.
  • Assist in the installation and replacement of equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean work environment.
  • May operate heavy equipment or vehicles as needed.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
  • Class D Water or Wastewater Operator's License within 6 months of hire.
  • Higher-level license within 30 months of hire.
  • CDL with HAZMAT endorsement may be required within 12 months for some positions.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing for safety-sensitive positions.
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment screening.
