Job Description
The US Army Installation Management Command is hiring an Archeologist for the Department of Public Works at Yakima Training Center, Washington. This permanent, full-time GS-11 position focuses on cultural resource management across a large military training area.
You will design, initiate, administer, and participate in cultural resource surveys and excavations. The role involves consulting with the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Tribes, and the Department of Interior.

- Basic Requirement: A bachelor's degree (or higher) that included 3 semester hours each in history of archeology, archeology of a major geographical area, regional archeology, theory and methods of archeology, and archeological field school. Plus 6 semester hours in related coursework such as geography, geology, history, environmental studies, scientific writing, or surveying.
- Alternative Basic Requirement: A degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum included coursework sufficiently similar to the above (including archeological field school).
- Combination of education and experience: College-level education or training that provided equivalent knowledge, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
- Four years of archeological work experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology, including field experience (survey, excavation, lab analysis, report writing) and ability to serve as a crew chief.
- Specialized Experience (GS-9 level): One year of experience conducting field investigations to collect archeological and cultural environmental data, analyzing fieldwork data and generating reports for environmental compliance on large areas (e.g., military base), and assisting in assessing proposed projects or permits for compliance with environmental or archeological laws.

- Prepare and/or review documentation on properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
- Provide archeological expertise in locating, inventorying, evaluating, and protecting historic properties.
- Maintain records of compliance efforts including general information and specific project details.
- Conduct field investigations to collect archeological and cultural environmental data to locate or preserve historical locations.
- Analyze fieldwork data and generate reports to assess environmental compliance for large areas such as a military base.
- Assist in assessing proposed projects or permits to ensure compliance with environmental and archeological laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
