Job Description

You will serve as an Interdisciplinary Engineer/Chemist in the Air Systems Group, Propulsion & Power Engineering Department of NAVAIRWARCENAC DIV at Patuxent River, Maryland.

In this role, you will direct research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) programs for aviation and maritime fuels and lubricants used by the Navy.

You will establish chemical and physical property requirements for all air-breathing propulsion fuels and lubricants, and lead multidisciplinary teams to assess fuel and lubricant compatibility with military and commercial systems.

Qualification

To qualify, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12/13 grade level or pay band DP-04 in the Federal service or equivalent in the private/public sector. Specialized experience must include directing RDT&E programs for aviation and maritime fuels and lubricants, establishing technical specifications, leading multidisciplinary teams, and formulating policies.

  • Directing research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) programs for aviation and maritime fuels and lubricants.
  • Establishing technical specifications and quality assurance requirements for propulsion fuels and lubricants.
  • Leading multidisciplinary teams in assessing fuel and lubricant compatibility with military and commercial systems.
  • Conducting development and certification efforts for alternative or synthetic fuels and lubricants.
  • Formulating policies related to procurement, storage, supply, delivery, and use of aviation and shipboard fuels, including quality assurance measures.
  • Representing the agency at national and international technical meetings.
  • For the 0830/0861/0893 series: a professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, or registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • For the 1320 series: a degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering with 30 semester hours in chemistry, plus mathematics through differential and integral calculus and 6 semester hours of physics.
  • Experience can include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs.
Role Responsibilities

Direct research and development of fuels and lubricants for Naval aircraft.

  • Provide fuels and lubricants expertise to various aircraft Integrated Program Teams and the fleet.
  • Establish chemical and physical property requirements for all air-breathing propulsion fuels and lubricants used by the Navy.
  • Develop and execute research to assess operational impacts of fuels from alternate sources and certify flightworthiness.
  • Lead RDT&E efforts for Naval fuels (aircraft, missile, and ship), fuels prognostics/diagnostics, fuel handling/filtration, and aircraft ground refueling.
  • Lead teams of scientists and engineers from U.S. military services, Allies, and industry to ensure compatibility of military weapon systems with commercial and military aviation and marine fuels worldwide.
