The Port of Long Beach, one of the world's busiest seaports, is seeking a Manager of Engineering Harbor to lead the Construction Management Division within the Engineering Services Bureau.

Qualification

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field and significant experience in construction management, preferably in a port or maritime setting. Professional engineering registration is highly desirable.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in construction management, including 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Experience managing large-scale capital improvement projects, preferably in a port, maritime, or heavy civil environment.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of construction contract administration, project scheduling, and cost control.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability practices in port operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
Role Responsibilities

Lead the Construction Management Division in planning, executing, and closing out construction projects.

  • Oversee project managers and field staff to ensure projects meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and internal bureaus to resolve technical and logistical issues.
  • Develop and implement construction management policies, procedures, and proven methods.
  • Monitor project performance and prepare reports for senior leadership and port commissioners.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage risk by identifying potential issues and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Participate in the selection and evaluation of contractors and consultants.
  • Represent the Port at public meetings and industry events as needed.

This is an at-will position, meaning employment is not covered by civil service rules.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for project milestones or emergencies.
  • Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Port of Long Beach.
