Job Description

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Disposition Services is hiring a Materials Examiner and Identifier (Fork Lift Operator) at its Battle Creek, Michigan facility. In this WG-6 role, you will receive, examine, and determine the condition and disposition of a wide variety of materials.

You will review disposal turn-in documents, compare data against property, and ensure correct stock numbers, nomenclature, quantities, and disposal authority codes. You will visually inspect usable property, determine condition and reportability, and assign appropriate classification instructions for warehousing.

You will also verify demilitarization codes, maintain segregated storage, and perform special and periodic inventories. Operating forklifts and related materials handling equipment to move, load, unload, stack, or unstack palletized materials is a core duty.

Salary: $25.73 - $30.02 per hour.

Qualification

To qualify for this WG-6 Materials Examiner and Identifier (Fork Lift Operator) position, you must meet the screen-out element and demonstrate the ability to perform the work without more than normal supervision. Experience can be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work.

Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily length of time.

  • Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations.
  • You must meet the screen-out element (SOE): Ability to do the work of a Materials Examiner and Identifier (FLO) without more than normal supervision.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations.
  • Volunteer work can build critical competencies and is credited equally to paid experience.
  • No specific length of time is required; the quality of experience is emphasized.
  • Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element will be eliminated from further competition.
  • You must show through experience and training that you possess the required knowledge, skills, and ability.
  • Physical effort: moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 lbs; work on hard surfaces, over rough terrain, and on forklifts.
  • Working conditions: inside warehouses (hot, cold, damp, drafty) and outside areas (dock, scrap yards) exposed to weather.
  • Must wear safety equipment and exercise precautions to avoid injury from forklifts and other equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receive, examine, and determine the condition and disposition of a wide variety of materials.
  • Review disposal turn-in documents accompanying material.
  • Compare data against property to ensure correct stock number, nomenclature, quantity, unit of issue, disposal authority code, DEMIL, and condition code.
  • Visually inspect usable property for obvious signs of condition and determine acceptability.
  • Determine condition, reportability, and special handling requirements (e.g., hazardous material, precious metals, security, DEMIL, Special focus items).
  • Assign appropriate classification instructions for warehousing.
  • Verify accuracy of demilitarization codes and take action to challenge questionable items/codes.
  • Maintain segregated storage of property requiring DEMIL.
  • Ensure proper certification is attached to turn-in document when demilitarized by host or generating activity.
  • Perform special and periodic inventory of property; re-palletize/re-locate property as necessary.
