Job Description

The Supervisory Mission Support Specialist position is located in the Detroit Field Office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), within the Department of Homeland Security.

This role is responsible for supervising a team that provides direct administrative and operational support to frontline programs. You will plan, direct, and coordinate mission support services including budget, finance, procurement, personnel, logistics, and telecommunications.

As a supervisor, you will assign work, develop procedures, and ensure efficient service delivery.

Qualification

To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. This experience must include providing senior-level advisory and technical services for a mission support area, contributing to management decisions, developing new work methods, delivering briefings, and resolving complex mission support problems.

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 in the federal service.
  • Experience providing senior-level advisory and technical services for a mission support area.
  • Participating in and making contributions to management decisions in assigned program areas.
  • Developing new or modified mission support work methods, approaches, or procedures.
  • Developing and delivering briefings, project papers, status/staff reports, and correspondence to managers.
  • Resolving or advising on complex mission support problems requiring analysis and troubleshooting.

  • Experience can be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work through National Service programs.
  • Must meet Time-in-Grade requirements: 52 weeks at GS-12 or equivalent by 07/17/2026.

Role Responsibilities

Supervise a team of administrative employees providing mission support services.

  • Provide complex administrative services including management information systems, budget, finance, procurement, personnel, telecommunications, logistics, records, printing, mail, travel, and office equipment.
  • Develop and prescribe procedures and techniques to achieve efficient service delivery.
  • Assign and explain work requirements to subordinate staff.
  • Carry out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and support diversity.
  • Serve as a senior advisor on mission support issues, analyzing and troubleshooting unusual conditions.
  • Develop and deliver briefings, project papers, and correspondence to management.
  • Participate in management decisions for assigned program areas.

  • New CBP supervisors must complete mandatory leadership training, including 3 weeks in residence in Harpers Ferry, WV.
  • This position is not covered under a bargaining unit.
